If you're not a coffee drinker, today's blog post may not apply to you....unless you read news headlines.? This morning, I saw several news stories that made me think that my morning java had magical lifesaving powers.? Almost every news agency was reporting a link between coffee and a decreased risk of suicide. As it turns out, drinking coffee can't really save your life, but it did give coffee drinkers, like me, one more reason not to give up my habit.
Coffee: My Morning Lifesaver
I literally go to bed looking forward to my morning cappuccino.? I only drink one and it's the highlight of my day.? It's creamy, indulgent and makes me feel optimistic about my day.? But a few years ago, I had to change my recipe because I couldn't stand the guilt over one of the ingredients I'd become addicted to.? I had to give up hazelnut creamer.? Yep, that stuff that they sell in yellow bottles that contains absolutely nothing good for you and has about a zillion calories per (reasonable) serving.? I used to drink it every day.? See?? Even weight loss writers have a few bad dietary habits.

It's hard to justify the contents of hazelnut creamer when you spend your day writing about good eating habits.? Even the fat-free variety (which is not fat-free, by the way) is full of icky ingredients.? But I thought that all my other healthy habits would somehow balance the scales.? Not so.? My daily intake of creamer totaled hundreds of calories and way too many grams of saturated and trans fat.? Yuck.
So I swapped two carefully measured tablespoons of sugar-free hazelnut syrup for the yellow goop and even though the swap isn't perfect, I now feel less guilty about my morning pleasure.
So here's my healthy Monday question for you:? What's in your coffee?? Do you know how many calories are in each cup?? Can you make any changes to cut a few calories or grams of fat?
