How to Stay on Your Diet at Dunkin Donuts

donutDunkin Donuts will be releasing a gluten-free donut in 2014.? Apparently the launch of the new product has been delayed because the donut maker was concerned that the treat would end up tasting like beans or grass. I can"t imagine that would go over very well with donut buyers.? But if they can get the donut to taste like a donut, would you prefer a gluten-free variety?

Is a Gluten-Free Donut Good for Your Diet?

For people with gluten sensitivity and with celiac disease, I guess the gluten-free donut is good news.? But my first thought when I saw this story was that thousands of dieters will soon be running to Dunkin Donuts in hopes of eating a healthier donut.? But just because the donut is gluten-free doesn't necessarily make it healthy.? Nor does it make it good for people who are trying to lose weight.? The nutritional information is not yet available for the gluten-free donut, but it is very possible that it will contain just as many calories and sugar as a traditional donut, maybe even more.

Ignore Fads to Lose Weight

If you're a savvy consumer, you know that just because a product has trendy health-related words attached to it that doesn't mean it is a good health choice for you.? But it still be hard not to get sucked into the marketing game that many food manufacturers play.? For example, some trans fat-free foods still contain trans fat.? Some low-calorie foods actually have more calories than comparable full-calorie items.? And words like "multi-grain," "gluten-free," "organic," "healthy," or "paleo" don't necessarily make a food more diet-friendly if weight loss is your goal.? Is it possible to eat a diet-friendly meal at Dunkin Donuts? Yes.? But it has nothing to do with grassy, beany, gluten-free products.

If you're not sure how to wade through the marketing muck to find foods that fit into a healthy eating program,? ignore the trends and the popular diets that could be bad for you.? Instead, talk to your doctor or to a registered dietitian to find out if there are any health concerns you need to address with your diet.? Then choose the best diet for you based on your own needs and lifestyle.
