Have you ever tried a fad diet?? Be honest!? Most of us have.? I'll confess that I've tried a few - although none recently.? I did Slimfast in college, I tried an egg diet to lose weight after my son was born, and yes, I even did a juice fast for a few weeks to slim down before I auditioned for the graduate dance program at UCLA (what a dumb idea!)? None of them worked.
Why Do We Fall For Fad Diets?
The thing that makes many popular fad diets appealing is that they are different.? They offer something new; a fresh angle.? For many people, myself included, when a new idea is introduced at a moment of vulnerability (i.e. when we need to lose weight) it causes us to throw our brains out the window. So a silly idea, like eating hot dogs to lose weight on the Military Diet, actually seems reasonable.? At a weak moment, we're willing to try anything.
But It's Backed By Research!
My current frustration with fad diets is that many are now using junk science to fool consumers.? Have you read my review of Zaggora hotpants?? It's a perfect example.? Diet pills and supplements are huge offenders in this area, as well.? A diet product may claim that they conducted a study, which sounds really impressive. And they may even say that their research "proves that you'll burn 30% more calories."? But 30% more than what?? Eating a cheeseburger?? In most cases, essential information like that is never provided.
What's a Dieter to Do?
So how do you find a reasonable diet that will actually work??? Working with a registered dietitian is a great place to start.? You should also talk to your doctor to see if you have any health considerations, like high blood pressure, that could affect your food choices.? Then use common sense.? If it sounds too good to be true, it is!
So now that I've 'fessed up about my dumb diet choices, I want to hear about yours.? Tell me about it on my Facebook page or leave a comment below.
