Obesity is one of the most widespread health problems. About 33,000 lives in the UK could save annually if people followed rules of healthy dieting. And having five portions of fruits and veggies each day has the biggest effect, according to experts from Oxford University. One third of the British consume enough fruit and vegetables, results in Scotland and Northern Ireland are much worse. British health specialists recommend having five portions of vegetables and fruit and not more than 6 grams of salt.
Dr. Peter Scarborough, from Oxford University, says: “Meeting dietary recommendations would have a massive effect on the health of the nation. According to our model, the biggest impact would be eating more fruit and veg. But this doesn't mean you should just stop at five - the more the better. Everyone knows that obesity causes a wide range of heart-vessel diseases, cancer and many more.
Senior dietitian of the research Victoria Taylor says: “This research highlights that well-worn dietary messages - like eating five portions of fruit and veg a day - shouldn't be overlooked, because they could have a huge impact on our health.
Fruit and vegetables play very important role in cancer and obesity prevention, so no wonder specialists recommend having at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. According to scientists, there are strong evidences that prove fruit and vegetables reduce risk of having cancer.
One of the main reasons of obesity in the UK is fast food. Recently, health specialists have suggested junk food outlets handing out cholesterol-lowering drugs to fight the effects of fast food. Taking only one statin pill every day would reduce the harm caused by cheeseburger and milkshake. One of the greatest advantages of such innovation is its price - only 5p a customer. But, sure, unhealthy diets does much more harm than just raising cholesterol. Dr. Darrel Francis and his colleagues are sure that reducing harm with a pill is the same as with people smoking cigarettes with filters and drivers wearing seatbelts. Although, one pill of statin a day can reduce risk of cardiovascular disease caused by daily consumption of cheeseburgers and milk shakes. Statin is considered to be quite safe, but some scientists have expressed concerns about side effects. Dr. Francis says: “Importantly, even partial adherence to statin therapy conveys a mortality benefit, suggesting that statins do not need to be taken daily to have some protective effect. “It's ironic that people are free to take as many unhealthy condiments in fast food outlets as they like, but statins, which are beneficial to heart health, have to be prescribed, - added Darrel.
Millions of health specialists all over the world are concerned with growing amount of obese people. Following simple rules of healthy dieting and working out can help anyone keep fit. All you have to do is to figure out your priorities and decide what you need most - health or another cheeseburger.
